Spring in Finland & 8 signs it’s here

in Life on 03/04/17

Winter is finally finished in Finland, hooray!… It isn’t that you don’t like it, you do (somewhat… maybe?) but it’s just so nice to have spring finally here I’m sure we all agree. Warmer days, longer daylight hours and all round increased zest for life.

All the snow is melting fast here in southwest Finland,

The little things that show winter is over are wonderful and then you suddenly realise it’ll be warm before you know it. There are already 8 signs that the spring is here in Finland and they’re all awesome.

The longer spring daylight hours

spring-in-finland -8-signs-its-here Walking outside in the evening and it’s still light is a nice surprise, it’s unexpected because you get so used to the darkness. It gets lighter very quickly when the spring arrives in Finland and it takes a while to adjust (the same goes for when it gets darker again in autumn).
It’s also not pitch black looking at the windows at nighttime anymore, you can see it’s lightening up.

The ice is getting weak

Sunset in Finland with ice and trees. Turku, Southwest Finland There’s still some ice around, we found a nice big sheet to walk on today but fell through, luckily without getting wet socks. The areas of ice that are still left look solid but are all melted underneath, it’s fun for the kids though, cracking the ice and then getting muddy puddles to jump in.

All the spring clothes in the shops

The shops are jam-packed full of spring clothes, you name it, it’s there and you’ll probably want it when you walk past if you’re anything like me, it’s so tempting after a long Finnish winter.

Don’t need to warm the car

We don’t need to plug-in our car anymore (block heater), or scrape the snow off. It’s great for saving time because it means you don’t need to spend that extra ten minutes or so doing it.

Don’t need as many winter clothes

You can get ready 10 minutes quicker than before because you don’t need to wear all your winter gear. I’ll need to time one day how long it takes to dress a baby and 3 yr old for going out in winter, it takes ages and especially when they don’t like getting dressed.

You can wear lighter clothes

It’s great wearing clothes that you haven’t worn for ages, it’s been so long since you’ve worn them, it feels like they’re new again.

The birds are out singing

We opened the window today and this lovely chirping came in, it’s been a while since we’ve heard that. Such a sweet sound and one of those little things that you don’t even realise makes you smile and happy until you hear it and

Being outside is comfortable now in Finland

There’s no longer that hurry to get inside because you’re cold, or having to walk fast to warm up. It’s actually really pleasant now that spring is here.

All that’s left to do now is sit back, enjoy and wait for the spring to come out in full colorful force.

❄️ Any sign of spring yet where you’re living? or are you heading into autumn? What signs make you realise spring is here, we’d love to hear from you.
